Balaklava Community Children’s Centre
Proudly serving families living in the Wakefield Regional Council area, Balaklava Community Children’s Centre (BCCC) is based in the Balaklava township. Open 10 hours each week day, 50 weeks of the year, BCCC offers families Long Day Care, Preschool, Out of School Hours Care and Vacation Care. Catering for children from 6 weeks to 12 years in a vertically grouped structure, BCCC is a combined community-based not-for-profit Centre with a Department for Education and Child Development Preschool. From within a 60km radius, approximately 150 babies and children from farming, isolated and urban communities utilise our services on a weekly basis (60 per day, with around 30% of Preschool children accessing one of the school buses to reach the Centre.
The Australian Early Development Census 2009 to 2015 results indicate that 1 in 5 to 1 in 3 children living in Wakefield are developmentally vulnerable or at risk, falling below both the National and State averages in all 5 domains assessed. This strongly influences the approach educators take in delivering high quality care with an unrelenting focus on relationships, wellbeing, play-based approaches and literacy development. Our 2 Playgroups, one literacy based and the other with a nature play focus, are important outreach programs within the community.
Starting with keen observation, the Visible Learning platform has been a focus for deepening educator pedagogy. We are now focused on supporting children’s holistic development across the site by exploring sensory play and building dispositions of curiosity, persistence and resourcefulness.
